Good to know

  • False friend: atender is not "to attend". To attend a class is assistir a uma aula, and to attend an event is ir a or participar de.
  • Phone and door: atender o telefone (to answer the phone), atender a porta (to answer the door). To answer a question or a message, use responder.
  • Serving people: stores, doctors and offices atendem their customers and patients: O médico atende às terças. (The doctor sees patients on Tuesdays.) The noun is o atendimento (service).
