Good to know
- Ter que + infinitive means "to have to": Tenho que ir. (I have to go.) You'll also see ter de, which means the same.
- Tem means "there is" or "there are". In everyday Brazilian Portuguese, it's much more common than há: Tem um mercado na esquina. (There's a grocery store on the corner.) Não tem problema. (No problem.)
- Where English uses "to be", Portuguese often uses ter: Eu tenho trinta anos. (I'm thirty.) Also ter medo (to be afraid), ter razão (to be right) and ter sorte (to be lucky).
- Tem or têm? It's ele tem but eles têm, with a circumflex. In Brazil, both sound the same.
