Today there's nothing new. You read a longer story, see the week on one page and practice all five days mixed together.

It's Saturday, a few minutes before five. Everything that Emma, Lucas, Rafa, Carol and Bia have been preparing all week is about to happen.

Warm-up: do you remember?

Sábado, cinco da tarde. O apartamento da Emma foi arrumado, a mesa está posta e vinte pessoas estão esperando em silêncio. Saturday, five in the afternoon. Emma’s apartment has been tidied, the table is set and twenty people are waiting in silence.

O Seu Zé ficou de mandar uma mensagem antes de eles subirem. Seu Zé said he’d send a message before they came up.

Lucas Gente, o Seu Zé acabou de escrever. Eles tão subindo! Apaga a luz! Guys, Seu Zé just wrote. They’re coming up! Turn off the light!

Bia Cadê o bolo? Where’s the cake?

Emma Tá na cozinha. Psiu, fala baixinho! It’s in the kitchen. Shh, keep your voice down!

Seu Zé Dona Marta, a Emma pediu para a senhora entrar um minutinho. Dona Marta, Emma asked you to come in for a minute.

Dona Marta Mas por que está tudo escuro? Emma, minha filha, cadê você? But why is it all dark? Emma, my dear, where are you?

Todos Surpresa! Parabéns, Dona Marta! Surprise! Happy birthday, Dona Marta!

Dona Marta Nossa Senhora! O que é isso? Tudo isso foi feito para mim? Good heavens! What is this? All this was done for me?

Emma Foi! A festa foi organizada por todos nós. Os salgadinhos foram feitos pelo Rafa, e o bolo foi trazido pela Carol e pela Bia. It was! The party was organized by all of us. The snacks were made by Rafa, and the cake was brought by Carol and Bia.

Dona Marta E eu sem saber de nada! Então foi por isso que o Seu Zé ficou duas horas no mercado comigo! And I knew nothing about it! So that’s why Seu Zé spent two hours at the market with me!

Seu Zé Eu tive que dar um jeito para a senhora não voltar antes de tudo ficar pronto. I had to find a way for you not to come back before everything was ready.

Nesse momento, entra na sala um homem alto, de quem a Dona Marta fala todos os dias. At that moment, a tall man comes into the room, the one Dona Marta talks about every day.

Dona Marta Paulo! Meu filhinho! Você veio de Belo Horizonte sem me avisar? Paulo! My little boy! You came from Belo Horizonte without telling me?

Paulo Foi a Emma quem me ligou, mãe. Eu não ia deixar de vir. It was Emma who called me, Mom. I wasn’t going to miss it.

A Dona Marta fica emocionada e acaba chorando um pouquinho. O Lucas pega o violão e toca o samba de que ela mais gosta. Dona Marta is moved and ends up crying a little. Lucas picks up his guitar and plays the samba she likes best.

Dona Marta Essa é a festa mais bonita que já fizeram para mim. Obrigada por vocês terem feito tudo isso. This is the most beautiful party anyone has ever thrown for me. Thank you all for having done all this.

Carol A senhora merece. E a Emma também: tudo que ela faz, ela faz bem. É por isso que eu quero que ela continue trabalhando na agência. You deserve it. And so does Emma: everything she does, she does well. That’s why I want her to keep working at the agency.

Dona Marta Continuar? Emma, você vai ficar no Brasil? Só agora eu fiquei sabendo! Keep working? Emma, are you going to stay in Brazil? I’m only finding out now!

The week in one page

Day 71: the personal infinitive. An infinitive with its own subject. Endings: nothing, nothing, -mos, -em. No irregular verbs.

É melhor vocês virem cedo. You all had better come early.

It's para eu fazer, never para mim fazer. And it often replaces a subjunctive: para que eles entendam = para eles entenderem.

Day 72: the passive. Ser + participle is the event, estar + participle is the state, and the participle agrees. Se makes signs and general statements. In conversation, use eles with no subject, a gente or você.

A loja está fechada. The store is closed.
Aluga-se apartamento. Apartment for rent.
Aqui se come bem. The food is good here.
Roubaram meu celular. My phone was stolen.

Day 73: relative clauses. Que is never left out. A preposition goes in front, with quem for people and que for things. Onde is for places.

Trazer is toward where you are now, levar is to anywhere else.

Write: the story of a party or celebration you remember, in eight to ten sentences. Say who organized it and what was prepared (the passive), who was there (que, com quem, de quem), what had to happen before the guests arrived (antes de + personal infinitive), and how it turned out (ficar, dar certo, acabar + gerund).
