- Ask the way, follow directions and say how long something takes
- Describe your routine with sair, dormir, ver, ler, ouvir and say how often
Nothing new today. You'll read a longer story, look back over the week on one page, and practice all of it together. Tomorrow is the Phase 1 test.
Emma has been in Brazil for almost a month. This Saturday, Dona Marta takes her to the feira, the weekly street market that fills a street near their building with fruit, vegetables and fish.

Elas vão à feira. Fica perto: dá para ir a pé. They’re going to the street market. It’s close: you can walk there.
Dona Marta A feira fica ali. A gente vira à esquerda na segunda rua. The market is over there. We turn left at the second street.
Emma Eu preciso comprar frutas. E a senhora? I need to buy fruit. And you?
Dona Marta Eu quero tomate, cebola e um peixe. Amanhã eu vou fazer uma moqueca! I want tomatoes, onions and a fish. Tomorrow I’m going to make a moqueca!
Na feira, a Emma vê muitas frutas diferentes. At the market, Emma sees lots of different fruit.

A pastel (plural pastéis) is a thin, crisp fried pastry with a filling: cheese, meat, heart of palm. Eating one at the feira is a São Paulo tradition.

- The second verb stays in the infinitive: Eu quero viajar. Ela não pode ir.
- Precisar + verb, but precisar de + thing: Eu preciso trabalhar. Eu preciso de um carro.
- Ter que + verb is "to have to": A gente tem que ir de metrô.
- Polite "I'd like": Eu queria um café, por favor. Asking permission: Posso entrar? Asking if something is possible: Dá para pagar com cartão?

- In speech, esse and essa also do the work of este and esta.

- Numbers: cem (100), cento e vinte (120), duzentos (200), quinhentos (500), mil (1.000), um milhão (1.000.000). The hundreds agree: duzentas pessoas.
Day 25: finding your way
- Asking: Onde fica a estação? Como eu chego no centro? É longe?
- Directions: Vire à direita. Vire à esquerda. Siga em frente. Atravesse a rua.
- Where: na esquina (on the corner), até o sinal (as far as the traffic light), na primeira / segunda / terceira rua.
- Getting around: Eu pego o metrô e desço na segunda estação.
- How long: Quanto tempo demora? Demora vinte minutos. Leva uma hora.
