Good to know

  • Assistir TV, assistir a um filme: with TV, Brazilians usually just say assistir TV: Eu não assisto muita TV. (I don't watch much TV.) With a specific film, show or game, the standard form is assistir a (ao, à), and it's what you'll see in writing: Vamos assistir a um filme? (Shall we watch a movie?) In everyday speech, the a often disappears: assistir o jogo.
  • Not "to assist": assistir means to watch, or to attend as part of an audience: Quantas pessoas assistiram à palestra? (How many people attended the talk?) To help someone, use ajudar: Posso te ajudar? (Can I help you?)
  • Ver is just as common for TV and films: Ontem eu vi um filme ótimo. (I saw a great movie yesterday.)
