Good to know

  • Use the pronoun when it means "to have fun": Eu me divirto, A gente se divertiu. Without it, divertir means "to entertain" someone: O palhaço divertiu as crianças. (The clown entertained the kids.)
  • Divirta-se! (Have fun!) is what you say to someone heading to a party or off on a trip. To more than one person: Divirtam-se!
  • Divertir-se or curtir? In casual speech, Brazilians often say curtir, with no pronoun: Curti muito a festa! (I really enjoyed the party!) Curtir is also how you "like" a post on social media.
  • Divertido means "fun", not "funny": A festa foi divertida. (The party was fun.) "Funny" is engraçado.
