Good to know

  • Two meanings: cheirar is both to sniff something and to give off a smell: Ela cheirou a flor. (She smelled the flower.) A flor cheira bem. (The flower smells good.)
  • Cheirar a means to smell of or like something: A casa cheira a café. (The house smells like coffee.)
  • Noticing a smell: for "I smell gas", Brazilians say sentir cheiro de: Estou sentindo cheiro de gás. (I smell gas.)
  • Related words: o cheiro (the smell) and cheiroso (nice-smelling): Que bebê cheiroso! (What a sweet-smelling baby!)
